Description

This is a military style poncho liner from McGuire Gear (these are not issued). These blankets are made to the same specifications as the USGI poncho liner and they’re made in the USA so they are a great addition to any camping load out or emergency kit. The blanket has string tie downs for attaching to ponchos, tying multiple together or for making a quick shelter out of it. The blanket is warm and lightweight, without being bulky.

Features:

  • Lightweight Construction – Built with lightweight materials for extended use.
  • Water Resistant – It can be exposed to water for a short period of time without being damaged or saturated with water. Generally not recommended to submerge Water Resistant items unless item is made for that level of exposure.
  • String Tie Downs – There are strings along the corner and side for down or attaching to other pieces of gear.

Manufactured by:

  • McGuire Gear – Manufactured by McGuire Gear, an authorized US Government clothing manufacturer.

First and foremost these are way better quality than the other woobies sold on Amazon. I had a couple of the made in China Multicam ones that included stuff sacks and they weren’t even in the same ballpark. I HIGHLY advise you to skip those and go with McGuire. If they don’t have the color you want on Amazon then order directly through McGuire or another vendor that stocks their stuff like venture surplus or thunderhead outfitters. (I had to buy my Multicam one elsewhere because it wasn’t in stock here)

Ok, now onto the product itself. Several people are saying these aren’t as soft as the issued ones. That’s because they are brand new and must be washed a few times. When you get them they will be a little stiff. Just like a pair of jeans gets softer after a few months of wearing and washing these woobies do as well. My advice is to wash it 2-3 times as soon as you get it. Dry it on low heat and it should come out softer. Use it for a month or so and it will be ALOT softer. For whatever reason, my Multicam one came in super soft straight from the factory. The black one requited washing and some use to get soft. As for sizing, I’m around 5ft 11in and I can tuck it under my feet and still pull it over my head completely enclosing myself in the blanket as is needed when it gets really cold.

Also, you may want to tie all the strings up into bows like a shoe lace or something because if not you run the risk of them getting caught in the washer or dryer and ripping either themselves or the blanket. You can also elect to do what I did and use a seam ripper to remove the strings and sew paracord loops in their place like the Kifaru Woobie has. I ended up with 14 loops total, 1 in each corner, 2 on the top, 2 on the bottom, and 3 on each side. I used a different color paracord for the 2 loops at the top of the blanket because I wanted to easily be able to identify it. This is because I don’t want my face to be where my boots or feet have been. I made the part with the tag the bottom because I didn’t want it rubbing my face either.

I did save 1 of the included strings and looped it through one of my sewed on loops on the bottom corner near the tag. This allows me to gather the bottom of the blanket up and tie the string around it forming a makeshift foot box. (See pics for details)

All in all for $40 I think this is a solid product. It’s not nearly as warm as a Kifaru but it also packs down to about 1/3 the size and cost about 1/5 of the price. I also find it softer and better feeling against my skin than any other Woobie I have tried to date.

Again I state, skip the other brands and buy the USA made McGuire. Been there, done that. Nothing else comes close to the quality of these except the Kifaru but it’s a different product altogether. A lot thicker, bulkier, and not even close to the same price.

This is one heck of a product! We used this with our Bivvy’s and slept under the stars. (We had a wool blanket as back -up, but it wasn’t needed.)

We are just picky where we purchase our products. Mainly, we like to purchase products made in the U.S.A. and we will search out locally owned-operated businesses. Always keeping the money within the community or the U.S.A.

Venture Surplus, thanks for spoiling us with speedy delivery! My husband bites his nails and takes the finish off the wood flooring (pacing), if I placed an order someplace else. (SMH) I’m constantly hearing, “Where did you place that order again?” hahaha.
