- Frogskin Camouflage – This is Frogskin. Frogskin was developed and adopted in 1942 as the M1942 Camouflage Pattern. Frogskin was developed as a response to a request from Douglas MacArthur to create a specialized camouflage pattern for US Marines fighting in the Pacific during WWII. The pattern itself was designed by Norvell Gillespie, a US horticulturalist and editor to “Better Homes and Gardens”. Norvell drew inspiration from the colors and disruptive patterns on the skin of amphibians in his home garden. This resulted in 2 patterns being produced, a 5 color pattern that was comprised of greens and earthy tones meant to blend better in dense jungle foliage and a 3 color “beachside” version better suited for use on coral/ rocky atolls. Frogskin would go on to see usage throughout WWII and into Vietnam before being replaced by the ERDL based patterns of the late 1960’s.
