These are Snugpak Compression Sacks. These compression sacks are a great way to pack down that larger camp items like sleeping bags, clothing or other bulky items into a more compact and stowable size. The compression sacks are constructed from 100% nylon material and feature 4 compression straps and a cinch top opening. Due to their nylon construction these compression sacks are a great way to ensure your gear stays clean and dry in even the most austere of environments. Dimensions are directly from the dimensions provided on the manufacturers packaging , it is likely they are measured flat.
A So according to the formula C = 3.142 (PI) X D that makes an 18 inch 'flat' width measurement approx. 11.5 inches in diameter.A I would hope the dimensions given are overall length and 'diameter' (as width) because the XL bag has a width measurement of 9 inches and again using the formula C = 3.142(PI) X D results in a diameter 'D' of 5.73 inches where C = 18 inches (doubling the width measurement). That's a bit snug for stuffing a 3- season USMC sleeping bag or MSS intermediate bag in. I ordered an XL - I'll answer back when received and examined.

I purchased the Snugpak Compression Sack in XL. It comes in packaging about the size of a pilots flask (one pint). Yes you do need to attach the 2 straps through the buckles – easy enough. It is thin nylon but seems well stitched – made in the UK. I was able to easily stuff 2 woobies (poncho liners) in the XL size and likely had room for a third and able to cinch down. Don’t know if the entire MSS (patrol, intermediate bags and bivy) would fit but 2 bags or 1 bag and bivy would. It’s not tough material like Cordura so best to transport inside a pack or ruck.
SIZE: the flat measurements are W – 16 inches wide and L – 21 inches long. The ‘W’ measurement (9 inches) in the description is on the side of the box but is it errors on the small side. Even wide open the diameter is approx. 10 inches. I would assume ‘9’ inches is the ‘open round’ diameter as given by manufacturer. I asked a question about sizing in the FAQ section – the correct answer is the ‘W’ measurements in the description are the approx. ‘open round’ diameter of the sack in that particular size.
