This is a 1951 pattern of the US Army Mountain Rucksack. This rucksack is the continuation of the Mountain Rucksack developed for use by the US Army in the 1940’s. The Mountain Rucksack was a response to the need for a new specialized pack for troops operating in mountainous environments, mainly the recently constituted 10th Mountain Division. While the patterns of these packs generally follow the same theme there are differences, typically in the way of the materials that are used for construction, pocket layout and frames. The 1951 pattern features an olive drab canvas material that makes up the bulk of this bag, the heavier canvas material ensure longevity and solid durability. Additionally, over previous iterations of the Mountain Rucksack the 1951 pattern used leather for the lashing straps as opposed to cotton webbing. The feature set of the 1951 pattern Mountain Rucksack are as follows. Each pack consists of a large main compartment with cord cinch string at the opening, flapped lid with 2 lashing straps, zipper compartment in flap lid, 3 exterior pockets, 2 web gear attachment points, a metal pack frame, adjustable shoulder straps as well as a compression strap for gear stowed on the gear attachment points.
