Description
This is a Wool Field Jacket M-1944, often known as the Eisenhower Jacket or Ike Jacket. The Ike Jacket was adopted by the US Army in November of 1944. The Ike Jacket was worn as a field jacket in theater and as a dress top while in garrison, however soldiers usually saved their Ike Jackets for garrison wear rather than using it in the field.
While this history of the Ike Jacket is rather short, this is the story of how the jacket came to be. While visiting the 7th Bomber Command in England in 1942 Eisenhower openly admired a uniform jacket worn by then Major General Ira C. Eaker. The jacket Eaker was wearing was specially made by a London tailor for Eaker. Eaker gave Eisenhower the jacket, which fit him. Shortly after, Eisenhower had a very similar style jacket made which went on to become the Ike Jacket. While this jacket saw limited use during the Second World War it did go on to see all of the Korean conflict before being retired from service 1960. The US Air Force continued to use the Ike Jacket design in their dress uniforms up until 1964.
The Ike Jackets we have available are from the post WWII into the Korean War era. These jackets feature a wool construction, button closure, waist adjusters, button cuffs, shoulder epaulettes and 2 buttoned chest pockets. All of the available jackets were used at some point or another and may have patches from their previous owner’s, at this time we cannot fulfill requests for specifically a patched or non patched jacket. These jackets are a super cool piece of 20th century war history and are perfect for collectors and reenactors alike.
