These are USGI Mess Kits. Mess kits have long a staple of the US Soldier, Sailor, Airmen or Marines kit since the founding of this country. The USGI Mess Kit we are more or less familiar with was originally adopted in the 1940’s as the M1942 Mess Kit. Through the years, and the conflicts, the mess kits saw minor modifications eventually culminating into the mess kits that were familiar with today. Mess Kits were a necessary component of any US Military member’s kit. Until MRE’s became mainstream the primary way of feeding hungry troops was with field kitchens or the old canned rations. This required troops to carry their own cutlery and plate/ bowl to receive or eat their food. With the introduction of MRE’s troops no longer needed to carry bulky mess kits with them due to the MRE’s being prepackaged to eat right from the bag. The USGI Mess Kit is constructed from stainless steel and features a 2 part design. The lower half includes a handle for easy carry or for grabbing off a stove/ burner and the upper half is portioned into 2 sections to keep those beans from touching your other food. Both halves can be secured together for convenient carry or storage of the kit when not in use. Despite being made obsolete by the modern MRE the USGI Mess Kit still has a place with campers, hikers or those who seek adventure in general.
