These are US Army Modular Sleep Systems or MSS for short. The MSS was adopted in the late 1980’s and was used all the way up into the 2000’s before being replaced with the Improved Modular Sleep System (IMSS). The new (for the time) MSS was a vast improvement over previously issued sleep systems with the newer nylon bags and bivy cover being warmer and more weather resistant than their older canvas counterparts. The MSS is a 4 piece system that consists of a patrol sleeping bag, an intermediate sleeping bag, a bivy cover and a stuff sack for carrying it all. The patrol bag is the general-purpose bag of the set and is designed to be used in temperature ranges above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The intermediate bag is designed for use when temperatures drop below 40 but are above 20. For anything below 20 degrees it is recommended users combine both bags for use at 20 and below. Both patrol and intermediate sleeping bags are a mummy style bag that is constructed from 100% nylon material with a polyester fill and a zipper closure. The bivy cover is also constructed from 100% nylon and features a zipper closure. The included stuff sack (and you guessed it) is also made from nylon and gives users a location to pack their MSS bivy and sleeping bags into for transport or storage.
