This is a USGI P66 Lightweight Rucksack Bag. The P66 Lightweight Rucksack was developed as an improvement to the previous P65 Lightweight Rucksack which in turn was an improvement over previous lightweight rucksack variations. The lightweight rucksack was developed to replace heavier canvas made rucksacks that were used in WWII and Korea. It became obvious rather quickly to MAAG (Military Assistance Advisory Group) during their involvement in the French-Indochina war that the heavy weight material constructed of bags would perform poorly in the hot jungle conditions of southeast Asia. With these observations in mind work began on what would ultimately become the lightweight rucksack. It’s smaller stature and lightweight material construction made them substantially more comfortable in the hot conditions on Vietnam. The P66 Lightweight Rucksack is constructed from early nylon material making them water resistant and extremely lightweight. The rucksack features a single large main compartment with a chinch opening and flapped lid. On the exterior of the there are 3 external pockets, 4 web gear attachment points and left/ right side lashing straps. Lastly on the bags rear there are mounting straps for attachment to the correct lightweight rucksack frame.
