USGI P66 Lightweight Rucksack, Complete

This is a complete USGI P66 Lightweight Rucksack. The P66 Lightweight Rucksack was developed as an improvement to the previous P65 Lightweight Rucksack which in turn was an improvement over previous lightweight rucksack variation. The lightweight rucksack was developed to replace heavier canvas made rucksacks that were used in WWII and Korea. It became obvious rather quickly to MAAG (Military Assistance Advisory Group) during their involvement in the French-Indochina war that the heavy weight material construction of bags would perform poorly in the hot jungle conditions of southeast Asia. With these observations in mind work they began on what would ultimately become the lightweight rucksack. It’s smaller stature and lightweight material construction made them substantially more comfortable in the hot conditions of Vietnam. The P66 Lightweight Rucksack is constructed from early nylon material making them water resistant and extremely lightweight. The rucksack features a single large main compartment with a cinch opening and flapped lid. On the exterior of the there are 3 external pockets, 4 web gear attachment points and left/ right side lashing straps. Included with these rucksacks is a 1st pattern riveted frame. These frames feature upper mounting points for the upper shoulder straps and both vertical/horizontal cargo straps. In the frames middle we have a steel loop for lashing your rifle, shovel or other large attached items and a horizontal center support that is used for supporting the compatible cargo shelf. Finally at the bottom we have the lower frame wings where the lower part of the shoulder straps are attached as well as the lower frame back pad.
