Description
All canteens, regardless of pattern, were constructed during the 1940’s. At this time we CANNOT accommodate requests for ones with a specific date range.
Date ranges on canteens can vary, M1910 pattern canteens were made as late as 1944.
These canteens were TYPICALLY soldered together with a LEAD/TIN mixture! As a result we DO NOT recommend drinking out of these. Beyond that, they’re old and need a good cleaning if you still desire to drink out of it.
These are USGI World War 2 Canteens. These canteens were the primary water source for all US troop throughout the war and well into Korea and Vietnam before being replaced with the plastic M1961 canteen. World War 2 canteens can be broken down into 2 patterns: the early M1910 aluminum version and the later M1942 CRS (corrosion resistant steel) version. As the war wound up the need for aluminum to be used elsewhere became imperative (primarily in the manufacture of aircraft) which led the US Military to switch to steel for the canteens. While steel was important to the war effort it was far easier to acquire when compared to aluminum. Both patterns of canteen use a plastic cap with cork seal and a chain to retain the cap to the canteen. M1910 canteens feature a vertical seam while M1942 CRS canteens feature a horizontal seam, this is the easiest way to determine an earlier canteen from a later one. So whether your gearing up for a reenactment or just like WWII collectables make sure to grab one of these USGI World War 2 Canteens today!
Please note these canteens are 80 plus years old and will show their age, USED canteens will have dents, scraps/ scratches and discoloration.
– M1910 Pattern Canteens are made of aluminum and feature a vertical seam that runs around the outside of the canteen.
– M1942 Pattern Canteens are made from steel and feature a horizontal seam around the canteens mid-line.
