Description
This is a US Navy MK2 “Talker” Helmet. These helmets were worn by US Navy radio personnel on a ships deck whose job was to relay information back to bridge during World War 2. The helmets were designed to fit over a large headset and microphone assembly worn by Navy radiomen and provided the radioman with additional protection against battlefield hazards at sea. The MK2 “Talker” Helmet features a steel shell construction, improved chin cup style chinstrap and interior padding for comfort when wearing the cumbersome helmet and headset assembly. The MK2 helmets were introduced during 1942 and went on to serve the US Navy until they were replaced by the Kevlar constructed MK4 helmet in the 1980s. While the “Talker” helmet has been largely retired some MK4’s remain in service with the USCG. If you feel like this helmet look familiar, then you may be “Rebel Scum” as these helmets (like a lot of WWII equipment) were the inspiration behind the Rebel Alliance helmets used in Star Wars. Overall, this is a really cool piece of history that sure to fit in any US Navy or US Military surplus collection.
The particular example we have available in is wonderful condition for its age. The exterior paint, chinstrap and padding are all in excellent condition. The only real ding on this helmet is some very minimal rusting/ corrosion on the interior of the shell. Included with the helmet is a US Navy Commander rank affixed to the helmets front. Given the stamping inside the helmet we believe this helmet to have been produced between 1943 and 1944 by McCord.
