Description
U.S. Naval Aviator Type Z2 Anti-G coveralls. The G-suit is a flight suit worn by aviators who are subject to high levels of “G”/acceleration force. It is designed to prevent a black-out and loss of consciousness caused by the blood pooling in the lower part of the body when under acceleration, thus depriving the brain of blood. The G-suit is a specially designed garment with tightly-fitting trousers that are equipped with inflatable bladders which, when pressurized through a g-sensitive valve in the aircraft, press firmly on the abdomen and legs, thus restricting the draining of blood away from the brain during periods of high acceleration. The Type Z2 suits were easier to fit into, less cumbersome than their counterparts in the tighter fitting cockpits of the era and provided a flight suit and G-suit in 1 design which appealed to most pilots who didn’t want to wear a flight suit and G-suit on top. The Z series of G-suits were issued to US Naval aviators during the second world war, the Type Z2 specifically was issued during the latter half of 1944.
