These are USGI 3 Color Desert Raid Mods Tops. Raid Modding is a style of modification often done to older USGI uniform tops making them nicer to wear with body armor. Modifications commonly include changing pocket orientations, closure methods (buttons, zippers, hook & loop) and adding hook and loop fastener for patches, nametapes, rank or other identifiers. While most Raid Mods follow a similar pattern, levels of modification do vary. An example of this variance is a 173rd style mod vs an NSW style mod as both have the waist pockets relocated. On 173rd style mod’s the waist pockets are relocated to the shoulders while on an NSW style mod the waist pockets are moved to the chest and the chest pockets move to the shoulders.
The concept of raid modding is not just a GWOT idea. Historically the Raid Mod can trace its earliest lineage back to WWII where members of the 101st Airborne commonly added additional padding, tie downs and pockets to their tops and pants. The Raid Mods we’re used to seeing today can be traced back to Vietnam where the soldiers of MACV SOG often relocated the waist pockets of their jungle tops to the shoulders. That brings us to the last 40 years. As US special forces gained traction in the late 80s/ early 90s it became common for individual operators to have their uniforms modified to better fit their needs. Fast forward to the early 2000s and standard infantry soldiers also begin to follow this trend due to their increased use of body armor systems. The additional fabric and pocket layout of the then current BDU/DCU was not ideal for usage with body armor. The additional layers trapped unnecessary heat and pockets were often at an inaccessible angle. As the GWOT progressed and the branches of the US Military began rolling out their own distinct uniforms many of the same modifications used in Raid Mod creation were built into the new uniforms. Examples of these inclusions can be seen in the Army Combat Uniform (ACU) and the Marine Corps Combat Utility Uniform (MCCUU). Overall, these are some real cool tops possibly used by some real cool guys. So whether you’re a GWOT collector or just want the best field shirt the raid mod is for you!
