**Most smocks will have large loop panels on the shoulders for IFF, but some will have a single small pocket or other variations.
This is a Smock that was used by the British Military and other military forces all over the world, and there really isn’t a great USGI equivalent. One of the more iconic pieces of foreign surplus, the DPM smock is a great choice for hiking, hunting, general outdoor use, or just to have around.
Intended to allow soldiers to carry more than a standard uniform top, the smock features four large pockets on the front with button closures, as well as two more pockets on the chest with zipper closures. The chest pockets go all the way to the seam for the collar, and would be a great place to store large, flat items like maps or other essential gear. The larger pockets are great for MRE’s, ammo, insulated gloves, or really anything else. The large buttons allow for easy use with winter gloves on, which is crucial in the environments this was intended for. The hood not only rolls up, but also includes an adjustable wire for use with a scoped rifle, or just to keep it off your face in the rain. It is also oversized to fit over helmets. There is an adjustable drawstring waist, and the cuffs are adjustable via hook and loop, which allow the user to tighten everything down to preserve warmth. On the other hand, the two-way zipper allows the user to easily open the jacket up to allow for more ventilation in hot climates. Most smocks will have large loop panels on the shoulders for IFF, but some will have a single small pocket or other variations. These smocks are very wind resistant, but not completely windproof. This allows for some breathability to help prevent overheating while moving around. They are not waterproof, just lightly water resistant. This can be easily remedied with DWR and other coatings to make this an even better outer layer, but as they come they are not waterproof. Overall this is a great field smock that can do anything from being worn with just a tee shirt in mild climates to serving as an outer layer in the cold wind.
