The Rhodesian Recon Vest, commonly referred to as the RRV, is a fan favorite of many early GWOT vets for its utility and modularity. The RRV gets its start in 2002 just as the Global War on Terror gets rolling, and while the RRV didn’t change much in its 11 years of service some small changes were implemented. The biggest of these changes was from the 2002 to 2003 and beyond versions. The original 2002 RRV’s had a 1-inch backstrap that disconnected on a single side, no hook and loop strap for hard armor plates to be affixed and no loop field within the main pocket. As 2003 rolled around the 1-inch strap was ditched for a 1.5-inch strap that could be disconnected for either side and the hard armor plate retaining strap and the loop field were added as well. While the RRV did undergo color and material changes the general design has remained the same since 2003. Color variations beyond the original khaki began around 2004 with the introduction of ranger green and coyote brown, then again in late 2006/early 2007 with UCP and DGII/AOR 1, the final color addition coming with the adoption of the Multicam in 2009/2010. The RRV was originally made from 1000D material early on but was changed to 500D shortly after the time that the digital patterns were adopted, this was done to shave a little weight off the RRV and generally became known as the V2 RRV. During and since then many other companies have produced RRV’s or like clones, examples of this are the LBT-9040A, Blackhawk S.T.R.I.K.E commando recon chest harness and Tasmanian Tiger chest rig MKII.

All this brings us to today. With the ever-growing attraction to the gear worn by US Soldiers in the early days of the Global War on Terror original RRV’s have become harder to source. Especially in Ranger Green and Multicam. The L.A.R.P Tactical RRV is by far the most 1 to 1 clone correct reproduction RRV on the market today. L.A.R.P Tactical is headed up by two veterans who used the very gear they are making. After using it during their time in both Ranger Regiment and US Army Special Forces, they wanted to be able to still use the gear they came to know and trust on deployment. While grabbing that same gear on the open market can be done, getting it new and in the pattern you want can be pretty difficult. So, they started digging into their favorite pieces of gear. From the dyeing process and exact coloration of Ranger Green used back in the day, to the way the gear was stitched and assembled, they have taken an enormous amount of time to recreate gear to the same specifications as the issued equivalent. Side by side, and in use, the gear they make is the same. Which is nuts and shows the dedication involved in order to make it happen. The L.A.R.P Tactical RRV retains all the features of the original down to the smallest of details. Said features include a generous amount of MOLLE webbing for pouches, the standard stowable bib, hard armor plate strap, 1.5-inch backstrap, pockets in both the main body and bib, MOLLE on the shoulder straps for using the issued RRV pack adapters or for routing hydration/cables, button snaps for stowing the bottom MOLLE row up and are compatible with the “H” harness adapter. H Strap not included. Overall, this is a super solid reproduction of a great general purpose chest rig and will serve you well for many years to come.
